The Moore Temple Boys Choir was organized in 1988 under the leadership of Bishop A. T. Moore, pastor of the Moore Temple Church of God in Christ. In 1990 the West Louisville Boys Choir evolved from the Moore Temple Boys Choir into a registered 501 c (3) non-profit organization. Under the direction of McDaniel Bluitt, executive director, the choir sought new ways to expand its mission by using music as a vehicle to reach children throughout the community.
Mission
The WLPAA is an arts driven organization dedicated to training young boys, ages 8-18, and young girls, ages 10-19, with fundamentally sound life skills and opportunities. We believe that we are uniquely positioned to address the artistic, academic, and social development of our youth through the performing arts.
Vision
Our vision is to create avenues of artistic opportunities and academic guidance to youth throughout Kentuckiana regardless of race, creed, or color.
Programs & Activities
The Girls Choir rehearses Monday and Wednesday, 4:30-6:30 p.m. while the Boys Choir rehearses twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
Throughout the year both choirs are engaged in our After School Tutorial, Peer Leadership Council (PLC), Summer Music Institute (SMI), and our Annual Hope Awards Dinner Concert.
The WLPAA currently averages two (2) concerts per month. These concerts/performances introduce the children to many exciting venues and provide a platform for the choir members to display the fundamental life skills of discipline, social development, benefits of hard work, and artistic excellence.
Leadership Opportunities
While the WLPAA consists of two (2) performing choirs, West Louisville Boys & West Louisville Girls Choirs, creating individuals who are assets to society, leadership is also emphasized. There is no better way to train a leader than by giving him/her a strong foundation. What better foundation could there be than education?
We have a strong valuable educational partnership with the University of Louisville. When a boy or girl graduates from high school while being a member of the choir, then he/she is eligible to receive a full scholarship to U. of L. This fall our After School Tutorials will be enhanced with the addition of tutors from U. of L. to instruct our students.
The West Louisville Performing Arts Academy also participates with U of L’s Signature Partnership. Students from Western Middle School ,Shawnee High School, Portland Elementary School and Maupin Elementary School are part of a satellite program. Students from these schools have an opportunity to have an after school Boys Choir on site. If this is not possible they too can become part of the main choir by rehearsing with the Boys Choir.
